gPhone
Symbian OS is an Open Source Mobile Operating System for phones like Nokia, Sony and a few other manufacturers while Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 that operates on HTC, Samsung and few other manufacturers is not Open Source. You need Windows 6 if you want Word, Xcel, Windows Push Mail and such. Windows 6 cost the manufacturers in MS licensing fees, you see.
Android – Google New gPhone is also Open Source & Free (albeit Proprietary) mobile Operating System so like FaceBook, Developers can create a myriad of Applications for download on this “Open Source” operating system if you have a gPhone. You can also use Google Docs for free on a gPhone I would imagine. So Free for all it seems.
What does this mean and why a Free Mobile OS? Are we to conclude that Google wants to make money from selling mobile phones then?
gPhone makes Gmail push mandatory on its phone. It also means that all of its Core applications like Maps, Mail and all of it other stuff is part of the offering on the new HTC manufactured and T-Mobile branded gPhone launched yesterday.
Off of all that seemingly free portfolio of offerings comes the opportunity to leverage off of the PVs or Page Views that can be used to … guess what? … Sell Advertising of course, not to mention Demographic Data that can also be gleaned off for further targeted marketing.
Rather than have a team of Adwords AM and BDMs roam around signing up mobile advertising clients just ship the phone with Gmail as the defacto Email Client and blamo (just came up with this word I find cool) … you have a captive audience using their only means to doing email potentially also looking at Google enabled Mobile Ads.
What are your choices as a consumer who could not care much about what an OS is?
Well you want a phone that’s cool, does the job and is cheap.
Since Windows 6 costs money in terms of licensing fees paid for by the Mobile phone manufacturer can cost more. You might want to use Google Docs … since it is FREE as well. Why pay for Word, Power Point and excel when Google provides it for free?
Google’s Android OS is tied into the strategic alliance it has with HTC and hence can be cheaper. The public sees a cool phone that does the job, carries their favorite Search Engine and is cheaper … so making that buying choice should be a “no brainer”.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Dan
